Applications under the UK Points Based System 

 

The process that allows foreign nationals to come to the UK for work and study is now called the Points Based System (PBS) following its introduction in the UK in early 2008.  This process comprises of one system of five tiers allowing entry to the UK. 

 

Foreign national who wish to come to the UK can apply under the following:

 

Tier 1 General enables highly skilled individuals to enter the UK to secure work and contribute to the UK economy 

 

Tier 1 Entrepreneur enables those wishing to invest in the UK by setting up or taking over businesses as well as being actively involved in the running of such a business

 

Tier 1 Investor enables high net worth individuals making a substantial financial investment in the UK

 

Tier 1 Post-Study Work enables outstanding international graduates to remain in the UK. This scheme replaced the previous International Graduate Scheme 

 

Tier 2 General enables sponsored skilled workers including those coming to fill shortage occupations to come to the UK 

 

Tier 2 Intra-Company Transfer enables established employees of a multinational company being transferred to a skilled job in the UK based branch of the same organisation. This helps the companies utilise skill and expertise of staff based in branches abroad

 

Tier 2 Ministers of Religion enables those entering the UK to work as a minister of religion, missionary or member of religious order

 

Tier 2 (Sportspeople) enables elite sports persons or coaches whose employment in the UK would make a significant contribution to the development of sport at the highest level

 

Tier 4 Student and Tier 4 Child enables foreign students to come to the UK to study

 

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme enables sponsored young people from participating countries seeking to experience life in the UK replacing the previous working holiday maker category. At present, there are a few countries that have subscribed to these scheme

 

Tier 5 Temporary Workers enables those coming to the UK for various reasons such as sportspeople, entertainers or creative artists for short periods of time.
