UK Settlement/ Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) applications

 

There are various ways you could be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR or Permanent Residence) in the UK. This largely depends on the nature of the visa or Limited Leave to Remain you have. You could be eligible to apply for ILR, among others:

 

  • Having been working in the UK for 5 years with a Work permit related visa
  • Having been a partner or family member of a Work Permit holder
  • Having been a spouse or family member of someone settled in the UK
  • Having been granted asylum and 5 years limited leave to remain in the UK as a Refugee
  • Having been a dependant of someone with Refugee status
  • Having been in the UK for a period of 10 years with valid leave to remain
  • Having been in the UK for 14 years under the long residence rule
  • Due to circumstance that the Home Office would deem compassionate and exceptional

 

In any case, there are specific requirements that applicants ought to meet in order to successfully apply for ILR in the UK such as proof of the Life in the UK Test, residence requirements, period of absence permitted, etc. 

If you are granted ILR you would permanently be free from immigration control with no restrictions on your length of stay or in engaging in employment in the UK. However, you should note that ILR can be revoked by the Home Office under certain circumstances.
