Working in the UK

 

The UK has over the years been known to welcome skilled persons to apply for work and contribute to the UK economy through various immigration opportunities offered. These categories are divided into Tiers 1 and 2. Tier 3 dealing with temporary workers is currently suspended. Tier 4 applies to those applying to come and study in the UK, while Tier 5 applies to temporary workers (government authorised exchange).

 

Tier 1 

 

This category is open for those who are recognised or have the potential to be recognised as leaders in the fields of science, arts and humanities. This is still undergoing extensive consultation and an announcement when it opens will be made by the Home Office in the future. Keep checking this page for the date this category will be open.

This category is for people who want to set up or take over, and be actively involved in running, a business or businesses here. This category is currently open to apply.

This category is for those who want make a substantial financial investment in the UK. This category is currently open to apply. 

This category is open for people who want to work here after recently graduating from a UK university. This category is ongoing with constant changes introduced by the Home Office. 

This category is for highly skilled workers. However, this category is currently closed to applicants outside the UK as well as migrants who are already here in most other immigration categories. 

 

Tier 2

 

This is for people who have a skilled job offer to fill a gap in the workforce that cannot be filled by a worker with residence in the UK. There are specific requirements to be met in order to apply under this category. 

This is for people who want to take up employment or posts or roles within their faith communities in the UK. There are other requirements to be met in order to apply under this category.

This is for elite sportspeople and coaches who are internationally established at the highest level, and will make a significant contribution to the development of their sport. As this definition is very precise and specific, you will need legal advice to assess your suitability to apply under this category.

This is for employees of multinational companies who are being transferred by their overseas employer to a UK branch, either on a long-term basis or for frequent short visits. This category requires you to be already employed by the same company or sister company in another country. There are also other requirements you will have to meet in order to satisfy the UK Immigration Rules.

 

 

Other Categories

 

This is for people that wish to come to the UK to work as a domestic worker in a private household. However, this category is under review.

This category is for people that wish to apply to come to the UK as representatives of overseas companies or as employees of overseas newspapers, news agencies or broadcasting organisations. This category also allows those already in the UK to extend their stay or to apply for settlement.

EEA are free to enter and take up employment in the UK. Please note that nationals of Bulgaria and Romania are subject to special regulations when it comes to working in the UK. There is also special Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme that allows Bulgarian or Romanian nationals to undertake short-term agricultural work in the UK.

Turkish nationals are allowed to work in the UK under the European Community Association Agreement (ECAA) with Turkey if they want to establish themselves in business in the UK.  

Commonwealth citizens with UK ancestry may be able to apply for permission to live and work in the UK. A citizen of a Commonwealth country with a grandparent born in the UK (including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) could qualify in this category.
